Traverse City street closures set for Bates, Grant, Rose and Fern streets

Commuters, cyclists, pedestrians and delivery routes in Traverse City were facing short-term closures on Bates Street and Grant Street, with the 600 blocks between Hannah Street and Grove Street scheduled to shut down Wednesday, July 15 and reopen by the end of Thursday, July 16. Brief temporary closures were also planned that morning on the 600 blocks of Rose Street and Fern Street, putting four neighborhood blocks into the summer maintenance cycle at once.

For nearby businesses, the timing mattered as much as the pavement work itself. Even a one-day or two-day closure can change customer access, employee parking, school drop-off routines and the way deliveries move through the blocks around Hannah and Grove, where drivers and people on foot already share tight streets. The short duration limited the disruption, but it still changed how people got between downtown and the surrounding residential blocks.

The closures also fit into Traverse City’s broader 2026 pavement preservation and reconstruction calendar. The City of Traverse City says the Department of Public Services’ Streets and Asset Management divisions, along with the Department of Municipal Utilities, review candidate streets each year based on condition, utility replacement needs and other factors. The city uses PASER software to rate streets from 1, very poor, to 10, excellent, and some projects are tied to the Mobility Action Plan and the proposed Vision Bike Network.

The city’s Complete Streets policy, adopted Dec. 15, 2025, pledged to commit 1% of the annual budget to Complete Streets projects and to keep safe, continuous access open for all modes of transportation during construction or maintenance work. That standard puts the July closures in a larger context: even brief work has to be weighed against how many people use the same blocks in different ways.

Other work on the 2026 pavement list included Oak Street, Seventh Street and Elmwood Avenue. Elmwood Avenue between West Front Street and West Eleventh Street was scheduled to close for a mill-and-fill project beginning May 26 and was expected to reopen June 12, showing that the Bates, Grant, Rose and Fern closures were part of a broader summer construction season rather than an isolated repair.
