Traverse City West alum Wyatt Danilowicz becomes school’s first MLB draft pick

Wyatt Danilowicz became the first player from Traverse City West High School ever selected in the MLB Draft when the Philadelphia Phillies took the left-hander in the eighth round, No. 249 overall, with a slot value of $222,200.

For Traverse City West, the pick turns one player’s rise into a program milestone. Danilowicz is not just a local alum with a big-league dream attached to his name. The University of Louisville lists him as a four-year baseball letterwinner at Traverse City West, a 2022 Division I first-team all-state selection and a two-time MHSBCA Dream Team honoree, which points to a high school résumé that already separated him from most peers before he ever reached the draft stage.

Louisville also identified Danilowicz as Michigan’s No. 1 left-handed pitcher and No. 8 overall player in the state in Perfect Game’s rankings. That ranking matters in Grand Traverse County because it shows the path from local fields to national attention was not a one-off leap. It was built through years of production, enough to put a Traverse City West pitcher on the radar of one of baseball’s most visible amateur pipelines and eventually into the Phillies’ draft room.

The draft itself underscored how narrow the path is. MLB’s expanded first day covered four rounds and 135 picks, and Danilowicz came off the board well after that opening wave, in a round where teams are still searching for arms with development upside. His selection gives Traverse City West a concrete place in that wider national picture, and it gives younger players in the county a name they can point to when they wonder whether a local school can send someone to pro baseball.

Danilowicz’s college numbers help explain why the Phillies made the call. Louisville said he posted a 2.70 ERA with 52 strikeouts and 25 walks in 33.1 innings in 2025, a season in which he was one of the Cardinals’ top bullpen arms during their run to the College World Series. The Cardinals also named him ACC Pitcher of the Week in February 2026, another sign that his development continued at a major college program in Louisville, Kentucky.

Born Nov. 14, 2003, in Traverse City, Danilowicz now stands as a homegrown proof point for a baseball community that has long produced good players but had never produced a draft pick from Traverse City West. The milestone changes the baseline for what local athletes can imagine from the school’s baseball program.
