Wilbur-Ellis Donates $1,000 to Great Lakes Humane Society for Veterinary Care

Wilbur-Ellis channeled $1,000 from its corporate Impact Fund to Great Lakes Humane Society last week, directing every dollar toward veterinary and medical costs at the all-volunteer shelter on Harry's Road in Leelanau County.

Because GLHS carries no payroll, that $1,000 moves straight to animal care: enough to cover vaccine series for roughly 20 to 40 dogs, microchip a comparable number of cats, or absorb a portion of emergency treatment for a sick or injured animal that arrives without a medical history. The shelter operates on a 10-acre farm about three miles west of Traverse City and serves as the only dog-sheltering option in Leelanau County, pulling animals from surrenders, owner relinquishments, and transfers from overcrowded facilities.

State records show the shelter logged more than 140 dog intakes in its most recent reporting period, with zero owner-requested euthanizations. Volunteers Holly Steele and Amy Wegner, both photographed by the Record-Eagle last month walking shelter dogs on the property, represent the core of that unpaid labor force. The Wilbur-Ellis gift arrives days after MDARD awarded GLHS a separate $5,000 grant on March 25, part of $150,000 distributed statewide to 24 registered shelters from the state's annual tax-return Animal Welfare Fund checkoff.
