A packed night at MDN nightclub on West Market Street unraveled in seconds when a fight broke out and a man pulled a gun, according to DJ Jabriel Mapp, also known as DJ Briel. Greensboro police said one person was shot and taken to the hospital after reports of gunfire came in about 1:39 a.m. Sunday.

Mapp said he had played most of the night but was off the decks during the last 20 minutes before the shooting. He described the room as “shoulder to shoulder,” saying the crowd was dense but the event had been going well until another DJ’s set was interrupted after an artist performed. Mapp said a fight started, a man was struck and fell, then pulled a gun from his side and fired randomly in the direction of the blow, hitting a woman who dropped to the floor.

The account points to a fast-moving scene that left little time for staff or patrons to react. Mapp said there was security at the event and pushed back on criticism aimed at the club’s staffing, arguing that people determined to bring weapons into nightlife venues can still find a way in. The shooting raises the same hard question for Greensboro nightlife: whether visible security is enough when a packed room can turn volatile in seconds.

Police said no arrests had been made and the case remained under active investigation. Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers is asking anyone with information to come forward. A CAD report also showed earlier police calls to the MDN nightclub for weapons and firearms on March 29 and Jan. 17, a detail that adds context to the concerns now surrounding the venue.

The shooting lands on a corridor that has already seen other violence. Another West Market Street nightclub, Club Orion at 4618 W. Market St., was the site of a shooting April 5 that left one person injured and expected to recover. Taken together, the incidents are likely to sharpen scrutiny of how clubs on the strip manage entry, staffing and weapons screening.

The City of Greensboro says crime data is used to guide budgeting, long-term planning, business and tourism decisions, and police deployment. The city’s Comprehensive Community Safety Plan, launched in June 2025, focuses on violence prevention, intervention and interruption. For residents watching the West Market Street corridor, the latest shooting is another reminder that nightlife safety is not just a police issue, but a test of how venues prevent danger before the first shot is fired.
