A head-on collision near the intersection of Summit Avenue and Helen Road killed one person and closed part of the road late Thursday night, Greensboro police said.

Officers responded around 11:50 p.m. on Jan. 29 after a northbound Honda Civic crossed the center line and struck a southbound Toyota Highlander. The force of the impact sent the Honda off the roadway and into a tree. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene; their identity is being withheld until family members have been notified.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. No information has been released about the extent of that person's injuries.

Investigators have not yet identified a cause. The Greensboro Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation, and police said there is no word on what caused the Honda to cross the center line.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000 or submit an anonymous tip through the P3tips app.
