Gibsonville Police Arrest Driver After Multi-Agency Chase Ends in Crash
Gibsonville police arrested 24-year-old Toby Jay Mills Jr. after his vehicle crashed into a patrol car on Preakness Parkway; no injuries were reported and Mills faces charges from four cities.

Gibsonville officers arrested 24-year-old Toby Jay Mills Jr. after a multi-jurisdiction pursuit ended when his vehicle struck a Gibsonville patrol car on Preakness Parkway in the Whitsett/Gibsonville area; police reported no injuries at the scene. The chase began after a Burlington traffic stop and carried into Alamance County before ending on Preakness Parkway, officials said.
“According to a news release from the Gibsonville Police Department, Alamance County Communications let them know about a driver who fled from a traffic stop conducted by the Burlington Police Department on Tuesday afternoon,” the release said. Gibsonville officers later saw the vehicle speeding on University Drive in Alamance County and attempted to stop it, setting off the pursuit that concluded when the suspect vehicle crashed into the patrol car.
Local reports place the alert and pursuit in the mid-afternoon; the Burlington Police Department sent out an alert about 2:30 p.m. and Gibsonville units engaged the vehicle as it entered the Whitsett area. Officers took Mills into custody at the crash site on Preakness Parkway, and Gibsonville police said the investigation remains active.
Mills faces a slate of charges from Gibsonville and at least three other agencies. “Mills Jr. was taken into custody and charged by the GPD with: Felony Flee to Elude Arrest; Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official; Driving While License Revoked; Carrying a Concealed Weapon; Speeding; failure to stop at a steady red light; injury to personal property. He was also charged by the Burlington Police Department with misdemeanor flee to elude arrest and driving while license revoked. The Cary Police Department charged him with felony larceny and misdemeanor flee to elude arrest and the Durham Police Department charged him with misdemeanor larceny. He is in the Alamance County Detention Center without bond,” a compiled report of charges states.
Court records reviewed by a local paper said officers found weapons on Mills after the arrest. “Mills Jr. was taken into custody and was found to have brass knuckles and a serrated kitchen knife with him, court records said.” WXII noted a booking photo is on file; the Alamance County Detention Center currently lists Mills in custody pending court action.
Gibsonville police and other agencies have indicated additional charges could be filed as investigators reconcile vehicle damage, witness statements, and evidence collected at the scene. Authorities have not released detailed estimates of damage to the Gibsonville patrol vehicle or any dashcam and bodycam footage; the investigation remains ongoing and prosecutors will determine formal filings in the coming days.
