Greensboro Advocate Amy Kemp Files for Guilford County Commissioner At-Large
Amy Kemp announced and filed her candidacy in mid-February 2026 to run for the Guilford County commissioner at-large seat; the Democratic primary is March 3, 2026.

Amy Kemp both announced her candidacy and filed her paperwork on Monday in mid-February 2026 to seek the at-large seat on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners that longtime Commissioner Kay Cashion will relinquish "at the end of next year." The Democratic primary is scheduled for March 3, 2026, with the general election set for November 3, 2026.
Kemp joins Reverends Greg Drumwright and Toby Hedgepeth on the Democratic primary ballot as three candidates vying for the single at-large nomination. Ballotpedia lists Tony Jacobelli as the Republican on the November 3 general election ballot, though the candidate roster for the race may not be complete.
Framing growth, schools and prevention as central themes, Kemp said, "Guilford County is my home, and I believe we’re at an exciting crossroads. With major companies choosing to invest here and historic improvements underway in our schools, we have the momentum to build a prosperous future. But we must manage that growth wisely so every neighborhood benefits - not just a few." Her campaign site states, "My vision is for a Guilford County where every child - and every resident - feels safe, supported, and empowered to succeed. Together, we can build a county where everyone has the opportunity to thrive." On health and youth services the site adds, "Invest in preventive care to help children grow up healthy and strong, from nutrition programs to wellness checks." Kemp has also said, "Prevention is the best intervention" in describing juvenile programs.
Kemp’s biography ties those priorities to local service and professional experience. She graduated from Jesse O. Sanderson High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Salem College in 1994 where she studied communications and political science, and has lived in Guilford County for 25 years after growing up in Raleigh. Her résumé includes roles with the NC Association of Realtors as events manager, diversity committee liaison and property management division liaison, tutoring at Jones Elementary School, service as a Guardian ad Litem for children in foster care, and participation on the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. She is a co-founder of CIA - Community, Information, Action - a monthly forum addressing food insecurity, health care access and immigration.
Local endorsements and support have surfaced early in Kemp’s campaign. Former U.S. Congresswoman Kathy Manning has endorsed Kemp, and a letter to the editor in the High Point Enterprise urged voters: "Please join me at the polls to vote for someone dedicated to our youth." Kemp’s campaign identifies its contact as P.O. Box 10463, Greensboro NC 27404 and electamykemp@gmail.com, and the site discloses the committee name and the line "Paid for by Committee to Elect Amy Kemp."
Kemp completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey in 2026 and lists fully funding public schools among her commitments. Other Guilford County filings around mid-February included Democratic Sheriff Danny Rogers filing for another term and Republican challengers Phil Byrd and Billy Queen entering the sheriff’s race; Rep. Alan Branson filed for the 59th State House, and Khem Erby filed for the Guilford County Board of Education District 6 seat. Voters will decide the Democratic primary on March 3, 2026; final candidate lists and filing details can be confirmed with the Guilford County Board of Elections.
