Greensboro autism therapy center closes after bankruptcy filing

Lovely Day ABA and Autism Services closed permanently in Greensboro after its owner filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving about 100 families suddenly without a local autism therapy provider and employees waiting on paychecks.

Sunrise ABA and Autism Services LLC filed Chapter 11 on June 16 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of North Carolina in Greensboro, under case number 2:26-bk-10466. That same day, founder Mamie Turner told employees and families that the center would not reopen.

The shutdown followed weeks of strain over a billing fight with an insurance provider. In May, administrators identified a six-figure payment problem, and the clinic briefly closed before reopening and then shutting down again in mid-June. Bankruptcy records list liabilities in the range of $100,001 to $1 million and assets of $0 to $100,000.

Lovely Day had served children with autism through specialized therapy and individualized care. One parent said: “As a mom, I know how to soften the blows. I can start preparation weeks in advance. When it happens the day of, I don’t know what to do.”

North Carolina Medicaid added applied behavior analysis as a covered service in 2014, and state figures put ABA spending at more than $505 million in 2025 for 13,447 people. Analysts projected the total could top $1 billion in 2027. In November 2025, a Wake County judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking Medicaid reimbursement cuts for autism therapy while litigation moved forward.
