A vehicle crash on West Wendover Avenue knocked down two utility and power poles, cut power to more than 500 Duke Energy customers, and forced road closures along one of Greensboro's busiest east-west corridors Sunday night into Monday morning.

Police said a car damaged utility equipment and brought down a power line, triggering the outage. The stretch of West Wendover between Elwell Avenue and Sykes Avenue was closed while crews worked to clear the hazard. At Norwalk Street, all westbound lanes were diverted onto Norwalk itself, and only one eastbound lane remained open. Duke Energy's outage map showed power was expected to be restored by 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

No injuries were reported in the crash, authorities confirmed. By Wednesday morning, all lanes on West Wendover Avenue had reopened, though Duke Energy crews remained on scene to continue repairing the downed poles and power lines.

Separately, Greensboro Police, Fire, and Guilford County EMS responded around 8 p.m. Monday to a fatal car-on-pedestrian crash at West Wendover Avenue near South Holden Road, roughly a mile southwest of the utility damage site. That crash is unrelated to the Duke Energy outage. A Honda Accord traveling west on Wendover struck pedestrian Brian Vaden, 46, of Madison, who was walking in the road. Vaden died at the scene and his next of kin were notified. Anyone with information about that crash is asked to contact Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
