Greensboro groom fatally shot hours after wedding celebration

Tyrek Burton was shot and killed in the parking lot outside the Yvonne J. Johnson Event Center at Barber Park on Oct. 12, 2024, about seven hours after he married in Greensboro. Greensboro police responded around 8:49 p.m., and Burton died in front of his new bride.

Investigators have said the shooting appeared to stem from a road-rage confrontation. No suspect has been publicly identified, and police are still searching for the person who fired the shots.

Burton was 37 and the father of four daughters. Family members said he and his wife, Kiara Burton, also identified in some reports as Kiara Holloway, had been together for 16 years before the wedding. The couple had been planning to honeymoon in Charlotte, but that trip never happened.

Relatives have described Burton as a provider and protector, words that have circulated widely in Greensboro as neighbors and friends react to the violence. The family also launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs and support the children he leaves behind.

The shooting has placed fresh scrutiny on violence spilling into ordinary public spaces, including event venues meant for celebrations. The City of Greensboro describes the Yvonne J. Johnson Event Center at Barber Park as a modern site for weddings, receptions and other gatherings, with space for up to 200 guests. That a fatal shooting happened there, in the lot outside a wedding reception, has been especially jarring for Guilford County residents who know Barber Park as a family destination.

As the investigation continues, the unanswered questions are basic ones: who confronted Burton, how the dispute escalated, and why a wedding night ended with a homicide scene. For Burton’s family, the case remains a stark reminder that the violence took place not in isolation, but at the end of a day that was supposed to begin a marriage and a life together.
