A Greensboro motorcyclist died Tuesday night after a Jeep Gladiator turned out of a parking lot on Creek Ridge Road and collided with his Harley-Davidson in the 700 block, a crash that shut down a busy stretch of the corridor and sent investigators back to one of the city’s more heavily traveled business strips.

Greensboro police said officers, firefighters and Guilford County EMS were called around 7:46 p.m. to the 700 block of Creek Ridge Road near 700 Creek Ridge Road. Police identified the rider as Richard Lee Meades, 48, of Greensboro. He was traveling west on Creek Ridge Road when the Jeep was turning east out of a parking lot, and Meades died at the scene from his injuries.

The crash forced closures in both directions of Creek Ridge Road between Lynhaven Drive and Riverside Drive, cutting off a key cross-town route lined with businesses and frequent driveway traffic. That kind of turning movement is exactly where motorcyclists are most exposed, especially on corridors where drivers are entering and leaving parking lots throughout the evening rush.

Police had not announced any charges or said whether speed, impairment or visibility contributed to the collision. It also was not immediately clear whether the Jeep driver was hurt. WFMY News 2 reported that no additional details about the crash or the extent of injuries were immediately available, while the city’s crash-report system allows official reports to be requested after the fact as investigators continue reconstructing what happened.

The death of Meades lands in a broader road-safety picture that stretches far beyond one Greensboro block. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show 6,228 motorcyclists were killed nationwide in 2024, accounting for 15% of all traffic fatalities. In North Carolina, the state Department of Transportation maintains crash data that tracks how often serious wrecks occur across the road network, a reminder that one fatal collision on Creek Ridge Road fits into a larger pattern of everyday streets carrying deadly consequences when cars and motorcycles converge.
