When prom season arrives, the total bill for a Guilford County family can clear $800 before the night even begins. A dress or tuxedo alone runs $250 to $550 at most retailers, and once shoes, jewelry, and hair are added, the cost climbs past $1,500 for many households. The Greensboro Youth Council's Camille's Closet and Theo's Threads pop-up is running this week at Four Seasons Town Centre with a straightforward answer to that math: everything is free.

The shop, organized by young volunteers through the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department's Greensboro Youth Council, opened Tuesday at the mall on High Point Road and runs through Saturday, April 11. Available items span the full prom outfit: dresses, dress pants, shirts, shoes, purses, jewelry, and ties. Any middle or high school student in Guilford County can walk in and shop at no cost.

Officers from the Greensboro Police Department stopped by the shop this week to show support for the youth volunteers coordinating the event, a visible nod to a program that has grown into one of the city's most consistent annual community efforts. The GYC is itself a volunteer organization made up of high school students from across Guilford County, meaning the teenagers running the shop and the teenagers shopping it are often peers.

Each year the program provides formal attire to hundreds of teens, covering prom, pageants, and other special occasions. Camille's Closet serves young women; Theo's Threads serves young men. The event is sponsored by Four Seasons Town Centre and Cheshire Center, and offered in partnership with Backpack Beginnings. No registration is required to attend.

The shop is open through Saturday at Four Seasons Town Centre, and more information is available at greensboro-nc.gov/camillescloset.
