Steve Perry, 61, fired multiple shots at a group of people in the 300 block of Denny Street on the night of March 7 before fleeing to his Richardson Avenue home roughly 300 feet away, where officers surrounded the house and arrested him after he surrendered, the High Point Police Department said.

Witnesses reported the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. No one in the group was injured.

After the shots-fired call came in, an officer with the department's K-9 unit started a track while patrol officers boxed in Perry's home on Richardson Avenue. Officers called Perry out of the house, and he eventually surrendered without further incident. When officers executed a search warrant at the residence, they found a Glock 9mm pistol inside.

Perry was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, discharging a firearm in city limits, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was booked into the Guilford County Jail in High Point and given a $30,000 secured bond.

The possession charge reflects Perry's status as a convicted felon. According to the N.C. Department of Adult Correction, Perry has numerous misdemeanor convictions; his only prior felony conviction was for hit-and-run in 1997.

The High Point Police Department's Patrol Division announced the arrest and charges on March 10, three days after the incident.
