Dion Spain, 27, of Greensboro is sitting in the Guilford County Jail without bond on a first-degree murder charge after High Point detectives identified him as the man who fatally shot Stanley J. Lerebours, 35, of Raleigh — a killing that only surfaced when Lerebours' car slammed into a home in the 500 block of Anaheim Street.

High Point officers arrived at roughly 10:45 p.m. on March 19 after a report of a vehicle striking a residence and found Lerebours inside the wrecked car with multiple gunshot wounds. Guilford County EMS transported him to the hospital in critical condition; he died the following morning on March 20.

The actual shooting scene remained unknown when officers first reached Anaheim Street. Detectives with the High Point Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit determined that Lerebours had been shot somewhere else, then drove before losing control and crashing into the home. Pinpointing that original location remains part of the continuing investigation, and police have not publicly disclosed a motive or said whether additional suspects are being sought.

Spain was arrested in Greensboro, bringing together three North Carolina cities in a single homicide case: the suspect from Guilford County's largest city, the victim from the state capital roughly 90 miles to the east, and the crime scene in Guilford County's second-largest city.

The Lerebours death lands early in what could be another difficult year for High Point, a city that had made notable strides against gun violence. High Point recorded just three homicides in 2024, the lowest total in more than a decade, before that number climbed back to five in 2025. The department's year-end report for 2025 found that overall crime fell 9%, but violent crime rose 6%.

Spain faces no bond on the first-degree murder charge. No court date has been publicly announced. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of High Point at 336-883-4000 or the High Point Police Department.
