A juvenile driver died Friday after crashing a stolen vehicle while fleeing Greensboro officers, ejected from the car on Huffine Mill Road; a female passenger also fell from the vehicle.
A juvenile driver died Friday night after being ejected from a stolen vehicle that crashed on Huffine Mill Road while fleeing Greensboro police, capping a pursuit that lasted only minutes but ended with one person dead and another injured.
Greensboro Police Department officers attempted an investigative stop at approximately 7:09 p.m. at the Refuel gas station in the 2400 block of East Market Street, where the vehicle had been reported stolen. The driver ignored officers' commands and sped away. The vehicle crashed in the 1200 block of Huffine Mill Road, where the juvenile driver was ejected. A female passenger also fell from the vehicle during the incident, sustaining minor injuries.
Greensboro Emergency Medical Services performed lifesaving measures on scene before transporting the driver to a local hospital. The driver later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Neither the juvenile driver nor the passenger has been publicly identified; the GPD said names were being withheld pending family notification and the ongoing investigation.
The GPD's Professional Standards Division has opened an internal review to determine whether departmental policies were followed during the pursuit. Officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative duty, a standard protocol the department follows after any pursuit resulting in serious injury or death.
Key questions remain unanswered, including the nature of the pursuit itself, whether charges connected to the stolen vehicle will be filed, and what the internal review will conclude about the decisions made on East Market Street before the driver fled. The GPD said it would release additional information as the investigation progresses.
