North Carolina A&T hires Alexis Williams as women’s volleyball assistant coach

North Carolina A&T added one of the strongest resumes in HBCU volleyball to its coaching staff, hiring Alexis Williams as an assistant coach with a direct role in the Aggies’ attack and their recruiting footprint. Williams will work with A&T’s pin hitters while also leading social media, alumni relations and fan engagement, giving Hal Clifton a staff addition that reaches well beyond the sideline in Greensboro.

Williams arrives with a decorated playing background at Jackson State University, where she was a three-time first-team All-SWAC selection, earned SWAC Freshman of the Year honors and finished her career with more than 1,000 kills. She served as a team captain throughout her Jackson State career and helped lead the Tigers to SWAC tournament titles in Spring 2021 and 2023. In the 2023 title match, she earned tournament MVP honors after producing 15 kills, 11 digs and a service ace. Williams also graduated from Jackson State with a Bachelor of Science degree and a master’s in sports science.

Her most recent coaching stop came at Prairie View A&M University, where she spent the 2025 season as a volunteer assistant coach. In Prairie View, Texas, Williams handled travel coordination, daily team operations, administrative tasks and event planning, including banquets and team functions. That season ended with the Lady Panthers winning the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season title under Dottie Hampton, a staff success that adds another layer to Williams’ profile as someone who has already worked inside a winning college program.

For A&T, the hire fits a program that has been climbing under Clifton’s leadership. Clifton has coached the Aggies since Aug. 2, 2011, and the program was 109-99 through the end of the 2024 season. A&T went 17-11 overall and 12-6 in the Coastal Athletic Association in 2024, finished fifth in the league, reached its first-ever CAA tournament and earned a bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship after two straight sub-.500 seasons following the move into the conference.

The breakthrough earned Clifton CAA Coach of the Year honors in 2024, making him the first A&T coach to win a conference coach-of-the-year award in the CAA. A&T had been picked 11th in the preseason poll, but the Aggies outplayed that projection and turned the season into a signal that the program’s next step may be about staying in the mix, not just arriving there. Williams’ combination of elite SWAC playing experience, recent HBCU coaching work and off-court program duties suggests A&T is trying to build that next step with both talent and reach.
