Officer-involved shooting after early morning Orchard Street call in Greensboro
Greensboro officers shot a man after he allegedly fired multiple rounds at them in the 1200 block of Orchard Street early Feb. 26; the suspect was hospitalized and the SBI and GPD Professional Standards are investigating.

A man who police say fired multiple rounds at officers in the 1200 block of Orchard Street was struck by return fire and taken to a hospital following a domestic-disturbance call early Feb. 26, Greensboro police said. No officers were injured in the exchange, and the suspect’s name has not been released.
Greensboro Police Department dispatchers answered a call about 12:41 a.m. reporting a man banging on a home’s window and attempting to force entry in the Orchard Street and Randleman Road area. Officers located the suspect in a nearby parking lot, and police say the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots at officers before leaving the scene in a vehicle.
A brief pursuit followed that ended back at the parking lot near the 1200 block of Orchard Street, where WRAL and WXII reported the suspect fired additional rounds at officers from his car. Police say the vehicle stopped in the lot, the suspect exited while continuing to fire, and officers returned fire, striking him. Officers immediately rendered aid and requested emergency medical services.
Emergency crews transported the man to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. WFMY reported the suspect was in critical condition as of Thursday; WRAL and WXII confirmed he was hospitalized but did not specify condition. Police did not release the hospital name or the suspect’s identity.
The Greensboro Police Department’s Professional Standards Division has opened an internal investigation, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting on scene, WXII reported. The officers involved were placed on administrative duty, per GPD standard policy, while the review proceeds.
Police closed Randleman Road and Orchard Street during the investigation. WXII gave closure details: Randleman Road was closed between Freeman Mill Road and W. Florida Street, and Orchard Street was closed between Randleman Road and W. Florida Street. Police asked drivers to avoid the area, and a WFMY reporter at the scene said officers began clearing the area shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.
Officials have not released the suspect’s name, the number or type of weapons involved, the number of shots fired, or how many officers fired during the incident. No criminal charges tied to the Feb. 26 shooting have been announced. WRAL and WXII say the Professional Standards Division will determine whether GPD policies were followed, with SBI assistance.
GPD has not provided a timeline for releasing additional information, and updates are expected as the internal and SBI inquiries continue. Reporters and city officials are pursuing confirmation of the suspect’s identity, criminal charges, body-worn camera availability, and any additional witness statements as investigators process the scene.
