Teen dies after shooting, Greensboro police investigate ninth homicide of 2026
A teen died after being brought to West Wendover Avenue with a gunshot wound, and Greensboro police say the shooting happened elsewhere before the child reached Moses Cone Hospital.

A teenager died after being rushed from West Wendover Avenue to Moses Cone Hospital, turning a Tuesday night call on Greensboro’s west side into the city’s ninth homicide of 2026.
Greensboro police said officers were sent at about 7:44 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, to the 4500 block of West Wendover Avenue after a report of a shooting. Greensboro Fire personnel and Guilford County EMS also responded to 4524 West Wendover Ave., where they found a juvenile with at least one gunshot wound.
Investigators quickly determined the teen was not shot at the West Wendover shopping area. Police said the victim had been injured elsewhere and was brought there after the shooting, a detail that shifts the focus from the commercial corridor itself to wherever the violence began before emergency crews got involved.
The juvenile was taken to Moses Cone Hospital and later pronounced dead. Greensboro officials described the case as a homicide, and police have not released the victim’s identity because the person was a minor.
The unanswered questions now matter far beyond one block of West Wendover Avenue. Residents who drive, shop and work along that corridor are left with a killing that unfolded at the edge of one of Greensboro’s busiest retail stretches, but started somewhere else. That makes the investigation about more than a single scene. It is now about where the teen was shot, how the victim ended up at the shopping area, and who was involved before police arrived.
For families in Guilford County, the loss adds another young life to a year already marked by deadly violence. For investigators, it means piecing together a homicide with a missing first scene and a victim who could not be identified publicly because of age. The city’s count now stands at nine homicides for 2026, a grim marker that keeps pressure on police to identify what happened before the teen reached West Wendover Avenue.
