UNCG Names Jerod Haase as New Men's Basketball Head Coach
After two seasons calling games for ESPN, Jerod Haase returned to coaching when UNCG named him its 12th men's basketball head coach on March 18.

Jerod Haase traded the broadcast booth for the sideline at Bodford Arena last Wednesday, when UNC Greensboro officially named the 51-year-old its 12th men's basketball head coach, according to The Field of 68, on a reported five-year deal.
Haase arrives with a résumé built across three decades and two elite programs. He served nine years as an assistant under Roy Williams, first at Kansas from 1999 to 2003, then at North Carolina from 2003 to 2012, where he was part of the 2005 and 2009 national championship teams. His first head-coaching job came at UAB, where he went 80-53 over four seasons from 2012 to 2016, leading the Blazers to back-to-back 20-win seasons and an NCAA Tournament second-round appearance in 2015. Stanford hired him next, and Haase spent eight seasons with the Cardinal, compiling a 126-127 record and 67-84 mark in Pac-12 play. His best year there came in 2019-20, when the Cardinal finished 20-12 before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the postseason. Stanford fired him after the 2023-24 season, and he spent the past two years working as a color commentator for college basketball broadcasts on ESPN.
His combined head-coaching record across Stanford and UAB stands at 206-180, per NevadaSportsNet, though Tar Heels Wire reported a conflicting figure of 255 wins; that total could not be independently reconciled from available sources.
Before his coaching career, Haase played collegiately at California before transferring to Kansas, where he sat out one season and then played three seasons from 1994 to 1997. His Cal tenure included a memorable 1992-93 run that featured a win over Duke in the NCAA Tournament.
The hire comes less than a month after UNCG declined to renew the contract of Mike Jones, who went 93-69 over five seasons as the Spartans' head coach. This past season ended at 15-19 overall and 9-9 in Southern Conference play. The program has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2021, when current Cincinnati coach Wes Miller led the Spartans there.
Haase will also be reuniting with UNCG athletic director Brian Mackin, who hired him at UAB more than a decade ago. The Spartans' last postseason appearance was the NIT in 2016 under Haase himself at UAB, making this a coaching hire with an unusually direct institutional connection.
