A fall on the back straight last spring became the start of McKale Lee’s turnaround. The Alief Taylor senior went from that painful area-meet stumble to qualifying for the state meet in two events, becoming Texas’ top-ranked 800-meter runner along the way.

Lee will race at the University Interscholastic League’s state meet in Austin next weekend, with Conference 6A running events set for Saturday, May 16, at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium. For a runner who once watched a promising race unravel in the first 200 meters, the return trip carries a sharper edge than a normal championship appearance.

“I’m going to state for the first time ever,” Lee said, adding that she is “really excited” and “really proud” of herself.

That confidence showed at the UIL 6A Area 19 & 20 meet on April 18 at LeRoy Crump Stadium in Houston, where Lee won the 800 meters in 2:08.50 and the 1600 meters in 5:05.00. Those marks helped put her on the state stage in two events and underscored how far her range has stretched this season. MileSplit lists her 2026 outdoor bests at 2:10.62 in the 800, 57.34 in the 400 and 5:04.24 in the 1600, a profile that shows more than one strong distance and a runner with multiple ways to score for Alief Taylor.

The breakthrough also reflects a longer climb under head girls track and cross country coach Karen Hawkins at Alief Taylor High School, 7555 Howell Sugar Land Rd. in Houston. A 2025 VYPE profile had already shown the upward trend, noting that Lee, then a junior, won silver in the 800 at district, placed fourth at area and advanced to regionals. This season, that progression turned into state qualification and a top ranking.

For Alief Taylor, Lee’s rise is the kind of story that travels quickly through campus hallways and neighborhood bleachers alike. One bad day on the track last year did not end her season. It became the point she ran past, and the reason she arrives in Austin with momentum, confidence and a chance to turn a personal setback into a state-level finish for her school and community.
