Cypress Man, 20, Arrested After Threatening to Bomb Highway 290

Deputies responding to a bomb threat at a Cypress home Monday night around 10 p.m. found what they were looking for: an AR-style rifle, a large amount of ammunition, and an array of materials consistent with explosive construction, including high-performance enamel, liquid chlorinator, all-purpose propane and what court documents describe as "electric batteries of an explosive weapon."

Jeremiah Chavez, 20, was detained at the residence on the 21900 block of Bronze Leaf Drive, a neighborhood situated just north of US 290 and inside the Grand Parkway, when Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman's Office deputies arrived. Court records state Chavez had threatened to bomb Highway 290 and told authorities he planned to detonate explosive devices and conduct a mass shooting.

Chavez now faces a charge of unlawful possession of components of explosives, a third-degree felony, according to court documents. He was booked into the Harris County Jail, where bond was set at $250,000.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad assisted Precinct 4 deputies in safely removing the materials from the Bronze Leaf Drive home. The Precinct 4 Constable's Office and court documents served as the basis for the charges and the account of what investigators found inside.

No injuries were reported. The case remains in its early stages, and no information about court appearance dates or defense counsel has been made public.
