Decomposed body found in wooded area off Spears Road, Harris County deputies investigate

Harris County deputies were called to a wooded area off Spears Road after a passerby came across a decomposed body and reported it to authorities, setting off an investigation that still has no confirmed cause of death or identity.

The remains were found Monday, May 4, 2026, near Spears Road and Spears-Gears Road in north Harris County, with one account placing the discovery in the 1200 block of Spears Road and another locating it near Rankin Road and Spears-Gears Road. Deputies quickly confirmed that a deceased person had been located, but the condition of the body made the first-stage investigation difficult.

By the time investigators reached the scene, the remains were in an advanced state of decomposition, limiting what could be seen and what could be determined. Officials had not yet established whether the death was natural, accidental or criminal. The body was believed to be male.

Click2Houston reported that the man was fully clothed and that investigators did not see visible trauma or injuries because of the body’s position at the scene. Detectives were still working to locate identifying markers, while the county’s CSI team and homicide detectives were sent in to help sort out the facts. That kind of response is standard when a body’s condition leaves the cause and manner of death unclear.

At this stage, the sheriff’s office had not released the person’s identity, a possible time of death or any suspect information. The case remained open, with investigators waiting on more evidence before they could say what happened in the woods off Spears Road.
