Disney surprises Houston ISD students ahead of Lion King production
Disney turned a Paige Elementary pep rally into a celebration as Houston ISD students prepared for a historic Lion King Kids performance.

Disney and DonorsChoose surprised the Paige Elementary community in Houston ISD on Thursday afternoon, bringing gifts, activities and Disney Store goodies to a school already in the middle of a rare stage production. The visit landed during an afternoon pep rally in the cafetorium, where students, teachers and families were preparing for Lion King Kids.
The production mattered beyond the costumes and applause. It was part of the first time Disney Musicals in Schools teamed with Theatre Under The Stars to bring a Lion King Kids show to four Houston-area campuses, putting Paige Elementary in a small inaugural group that also included Ross Elementary in Clear Creek ISD, Cimarron Elementary in Galena Park ISD and Savannah Lakes Elementary in Alvin ISD. For Paige, the surprise doubled as a public nod to a school theater effort that had already drawn in students, staff and families.

Disney says the Musicals in Schools program launched in 2010 to help under-resourced public elementary schools build sustainable theater programs and broaden access to the arts. The company says the program has reached more than 100,000 children in the United States and United Kingdom over more than 16 years. Theatre Under The Stars says the Houston-area partnership includes free performance materials and professional development for participating teachers, a combination that helps explain how a full elementary-school production could take shape on a campus like Paige.
That campus has the numbers of a school where outside support can make a real difference. DonorsChoose says Paige Elementary serves 405 students in pre-K through 5th grade with a 14.5-to-1 student-teacher ratio, and its teachers have had 37 projects funded through the platform. The Texas Tribune Schools Explorer lists the school as 98.1% economically disadvantaged, underscoring why a free arts program, backed by Disney and Theatre Under The Stars, carries extra weight there.
Paige Elementary is formally known as Roderick R. Paige Elementary School, named for Dr. Rod Paige. That history gave added significance to a school event that turned a routine school week into a moment of recognition for students who had spent weeks preparing for the show.
A rehearsal video from Paige said the final performance of Lion King Kids was scheduled for May 16, 2026, at 5 p.m. The surprise visit on Thursday made the countdown feel bigger, and it showed how a single elementary-school production can become a test case for who gets access to arts opportunities in Houston ISD and beyond.
