Explosion and Fire Shut Down Kuykendahl Road in North Harris County
An RV fire at Kuykendahl and Hufsmith-Kuykendahl roads exploded into shipping containers full of fireworks on March 18, sending blasts into the sky over Spring.

An RV fire at the intersection of Kuykendahl Road and Hufsmith-Kuykendahl Road in north Harris County spread to shipping containers full of fireworks on March 18, triggering a series of explosions audible and visible across the Spring area and forcing authorities to shut down Kuykendahl Road in both directions and close the nearby railroad tracks.
The sequence began when an RV caught fire and the owner attempted to extinguish it himself, according to the Klein Fire Department. The effort failed. The Spring Fire Department said the fire started small but quickly spread to containers of fireworks, producing blasts that shot into the air and were captured on video circulating on social media, showing bursts of light rising from a thick plume of smoke. The fire then moved beyond the containers, jumping to nearby woods and crossing the railroad tracks, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, which confirmed the fire traveled to railroad property and a wooded area.
More than five fire agencies converged on the scene. The Spring Fire Department and Harris County Fire Marshal's Office led the response, joined by crews from the Klein, Woodlands, and South Montgomery County fire departments. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office deputies assisted Spring Fire, having responded after reports of a loud explosion. In all, more than 20 units responded, with tankers and booster trucks called in to manage the scale of the blaze.
Officials said the fire was contained, with crews remaining on scene to work through hot spots. No injuries were reported.

Kuykendahl Road was closed in both directions at Hufsmith-Kuykendahl Road, and a stretch near State Highway 99 was also shut down. The railroad tracks crossing Kuykendahl were closed as well. Drivers in the area were warned to avoid the corridor or expect significant delays.
As of initial reporting on the evening of March 18, the cause of the original RV fire had not been determined. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office had not issued a cause determination, and investigators had not publicly identified the RV owner or indicated whether any investigation into the storage of fireworks in the shipping containers would follow.
