Family member fatally shoots man in northeast Houston, police say

A 42-year-old man died after being shot inside a home in northeast Houston, where police said the gunfire involved a family member at 6229 Fairchild Street in the Settegast area. Houston police said the shooting happened about 12:05 p.m. on May 6, and the victim was later pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting in progress and found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police said a male person of interest was in the front yard when officers arrived and surrendered without incident. Investigators also recovered a weapon at the scene.

Police said a woman was present and witnessed the shooting. The department said there was a familial relationship between the two men, but did not immediately identify what that relationship was. Both men lived at the residence, making the shooting especially unsettling for a neighborhood where the violence appears to have unfolded inside a shared home rather than on a street corner or in a public place.

Later reporting placed the home near Wayside Drive and North Loop East, underscoring that the fatal shooting happened in a dense pocket of northeast Houston familiar to many residents in and around Settegast. Police later said the alleged shooter was 28 years old. The victim’s identity remained pending notification of family members.

Houston police said the case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury after consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. That step means investigators are still working through the sequence of events, even as the immediate scene has been secured and the person of interest has been interviewed.

Ben Taub Hospital, where the victim died, is a Level I trauma center in the Texas Medical Center and one of only two adult Level I trauma centers in Harris County. The hospital treats more than 80,000 emergency patients each year, a reminder of the heavy trauma burden carried by Houston’s public hospital system when shootings and other violent injuries turn lethal.
