Harris County Deputy and Former NFL Player Melvin Foster Dies at 59
Former Dallas Cowboys player and Harris County deputy Melvin Foster, 59, died unexpectedly Saturday after 15 years with the sheriff's office.

Melvin Foster, a former University of Iowa linebacker who spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and served roughly 15 years as a Harris County deputy, died unexpectedly Saturday. He was 59.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Foster's death in a post on X, writing: "We're saddened by the recent and unexpected passing of our teammate, Deputy Melvin Foster. Melvin was an incredible man and public servant. He leaves behind a strong legacy. He served Harris County for almost 15 years."
Foster's path to the Harris County Sheriff's Office ran through some of Houston's most storied athletic history. He graduated from Jack Yates High School, where he was a member of the 1985 state championship football team. From Houston's Third Ward, he went on to the University of Iowa, where he played linebacker for the Hawkeyes, earned All-Big Ten recognition in the 1990 season, and helped Iowa reach the Rose Bowl that year. After college, Foster entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and spent time with the Dallas Cowboys organization in 1992.
He later returned to Houston and joined the Harris County Sheriff's Office, where he built a 15-year career that earned him the respect of colleagues and supervisors alike. "He was an impactful leader and was beloved by his teammates," Gonzalez said. "We extend our deepest condolences to his family. Melvin will be missed and never forgotten."

Friends, former teammates, and colleagues remembered Foster as a calm, steady force, whether he was lining up at linebacker or serving in uniform.
According to his online obituary, Foster was a "devoted Christian father who cherished his children, grandchildren, and extended family."
The Harris County Sheriff's Office has not released a cause of death, and funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Saturday. The sheriff's office is expected to release additional information as it becomes available.
