A domestic-violence call on Cypress Falls Drive in Fairwood pulled deputies, a helicopter and SWAT teams into northwest Harris County and ended with Tynice Friday dead and Keith Washington jailed on a murder charge. Authorities said the violence began around 9 p.m. Friday, April 10, near Grant Road and Spring Cypress Road, after a 911 call reported that Washington had shot his estranged wife inside the home.

Investigators said Washington shot out a living-room window, forced his way inside and shot Friday multiple times. Friday was 44. The couple’s son called 911 to report that his father had shot his mother, then tried to help her before deputies arrived. Two children, ages 6 and 18, were in the house and neither was physically injured, but Harris County Major Cedrick Collier said they witnessed a tragedy they will never forget and asked the community to keep them in its prayers.

The warning signs were already there. Investigators said Friday had recently filed for divorce, and family members said she feared for her safety because of Washington’s behavior. HAWC describes domestic abuse as a pattern of control, fear and intimidation, and the events on Cypress Falls Drive followed that pattern: a separation in progress, fear inside the family and then lethal violence inside the home.

Washington fled in a silver truck before deputies arrived. Officials said he was later found nearby, refused to comply and fired shots from inside the truck at law enforcement officers. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter joined the search, and Washington was eventually cornered on a dead-end road, triggering an HCSO SWAT response. After a several-hour standoff, he surrendered, was evaluated by EMS, interviewed by homicide detectives and booked on the murder charge.
