Harris County Precinct 1 Boosts Patrols Near Houses of Worship After Synagogue Attack
A truck-ramming attack at a Michigan synagogue prompted Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen to deploy more uniformed deputies near Houston-area houses of worship.

Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen ordered deputies to increase uniformed patrols near houses of worship across the precinct Wednesday, citing a violent attack on a synagogue in suburban West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, as the reason for the stepped-up security posture.
The West Bloomfield Township incident involved a man ramming a truck into the temple. Onsite private security officers exchanged gunfire with the driver, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Several outlets described the attack as a Detroit-area synagogue attack, with West Bloomfield Township sitting in the metropolitan Detroit region.
Rosen said the increased patrols are intended to provide a visible security presence and deter potential threats to synagogues and other houses of worship throughout the Houston metropolitan area. The deployment covers religious institutions across Precinct 1, which spans a broad swath of Harris County including northwest Houston and surrounding unincorporated communities.
The constable also issued a direct instruction to the public: anyone who witnesses a life-threatening emergency should immediately call 911.

The announcement came as Houston's Jewish community was itself processing the news from Michigan. Motive and suspect identity in the West Bloomfield Township attack had not been publicly confirmed as of Wednesday evening, and it remained unclear whether additional victims beyond the suspect were killed or injured.
Rosen's precautionary move reflects a broader challenge facing law enforcement agencies across the country: how to protect houses of worship that, by nature, are open and welcoming spaces. Harris County Precinct 1 has not disclosed how many deputies are assigned to the increased patrols, what hours they cover, or how long the heightened presence will remain in place.
