A new Harris County Sheriff’s Office substation on Butte Creek Road is being pitched as more than a building. Officials said the $7.6 million project at 17154 Butte Creek Road should put deputies, staff and resources closer to the I-45 and FM 1960 corridor, with the goal of faster response times, stronger patrol coverage and more local access for Spring-Klein neighborhoods and businesses.

The county identified the project as the HCSO District 6/New Patrol Substation, and said the property has already been acquired and is being renovated. Construction was expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with the station projected to open by mid-2027. The site sits in District I, which covers much of Spring and Klein between I-45 and Highway 249, a fast-growing section of unincorporated northern Harris County.

County materials say the new facility will include separate areas for patrol, investigations and support functions, along with showers and locker rooms for employees. It is also meant to host community meetings, educational programs and outreach efforts, a sign that the county wants the station to function as both an operational base and a neighborhood presence.

The project is funded through the 2022 bond referendum approved by Harris County voters on Nov. 8, 2022. That package totaled $1.2 billion across three propositions, and Proposition A reserved up to $100 million for public safety facilities and technology. The Harris County Office of the County Engineer is overseeing the planning, design, procurement and construction work for most of those projects, including the Spring-Klein substation.

The station lands as the sheriff’s office is reworking patrol districts for the first time in about two decades. Officials added a sixth district and reduced the geographic size of District I to concentrate more deputies in the Spring-Klein area, ease radio traffic and improve response times. Capt. Mike Koteras, who oversees District I, has said the department is trying to better patrol violent-crime hotspots along FM 1960 and I-45, where concerns include organized violent crime in apartment complexes, aggravated assaults, robberies at businesses and quality-of-life complaints.

The county’s own project page points to heavy call volume in nearby ZIP codes from 2019 through 2024 as part of the reason the station moved up the priority list. Tracy Harrison of the North Houston District has also stressed that crime prevention depends on constant education and reminders because residents can become complacent about car break-ins and other offenses. With nearly 5,100 employees, 200 volunteer reservists and service to more than 4.1 million residents, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is betting that a new foothold in Spring-Klein will bring more visible policing to one of the county’s busiest suburban corridors.
