Houston Community Mourns 'Life of the Party' Lost to Gun Violence
Miguel Angel Padilla Franco, 33, was shot and killed in the parking lot of Paradise City on the Gulf Freeway at 5 a.m. Saturday; no suspect is in custody.
The gunfire erupted around 5 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Paradise City Gentleman's Club at 12330 Gulf Freeway, where Monica Castillo ran toward her husband as the shots fell silent, only to find him near the entrance where he was later pronounced dead.
Miguel Angel Padilla Franco, 33, was not involved in any conflict, Houston police said. Investigators believe an altercation that began inside the club moved into the parking lot, where someone opened fire into a crowd. A security guard returned fire, though it is unclear whether his shots struck anyone. The guard cooperated with police and was cleared as a suspect. A second person was transported to a hospital by Houston Fire Department.
No arrests have been made. A light-colored vehicle fled the scene with multiple people inside, and HPD is asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Division. Surveillance cameras at the club had blind spots that may limit the footage available to investigators.
To the hundreds who knew him in Houston's slab community, Franco was "Nawfside Linco," a nickname honoring both his northwest Houston roots and his Lincoln. He was a core member of the Blue Line, a group within the slab world united by blue cars, custom builds and a shared ritual of rolling out together every weekend.

David Infante, owner of HTX Garage, said his bond with Franco ran far deeper than a shared love of cars. "He's my friend, but he's more like a brother," Infante said. He remembered Franco as the person who made sure no one sat out a weekend run. "Every weekend, 'Hey, where we going? Where are we pulling out?'" Infante said. "He was making sure that he gathered everybody, hit the street, and represented the Blue Line to the fullest."
On Sunday, friends and family gathered at Divine Shine Car Wash in Houston's Second Ward to remember Franco. Castillo said the public outpouring of support revealed just how many lives her husband had touched.
Paradise City operates nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and does not serve alcohol, running as a BYOB venue. The motive for the shooting has not been released.
