Houston police shot and killed a man at a motel in the 11000 block of the Southwest Freeway near Beltway 8 after callers reported a person firing into a room around 9 p.m., Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra said. HPD responded at 9:10 p.m. to a report of a shooting in progress, and officers encountered the armed suspect shortly after arriving, Menendez-Sierra said.

Officers told investigators they saw a male walking from the south side of the building holding a rifle as he approached officers at the scene. Menendez-Sierra said officers issued repeated verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon; when he refused, officers fired and struck him. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene; his identity has not been released.

No Houston officers were injured in the exchange, and emergency crews treated a woman found inside one of the motel rooms for a minor injury. After the shooting, officers found a woman with what appeared to be a graze wound from gunfire, and she was treated at the scene by the Houston Fire Department, officials said.

HPD investigators secured the area while collecting evidence at the motel and have opened a multiunit probe. The City of Houston newsroom release noted, “As with other officer-involved shootings in Houston, this case will undergo multiple layers of review.” The release added, “That process typically involves the Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division working with the DA's office to determine whether department policy and state law were followed.”

The Homicide Division, HPD Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs are conducting the departmental investigation while the Harris County District Attorney’s Office is performing an independent, parallel review. HPD said body-camera footage from the incident is expected to be released within 30 days under department procedures.

Investigators are asking the public for tips and any video captured near the Southwest Freeway motel. Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. Officers collected evidence at the scene as detectives continued interviews and dispatch-record checks to reconstruct the timeline of calls and arrivals.

Local reporting and past law-enforcement briefings have documented recurring public-safety challenges along stretches of the Southwest Freeway hotel and motel corridor, where tense standoffs and fatal shootings have occurred in prior years. HPD and the Harris County DA’s Office said the investigation remains active and further details, including the suspect’s identity and forensic findings, will be released when available.
