Houston shooting on Bandlon Drive headed to Harris County grand jury

A man was shot and killed in broad daylight at 11511 Bandlon Drive after what Houston police say was a physical fight, and the case is now headed to a Harris County grand jury instead of an immediate arrest-and-charge decision. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene after officers found him in a ditch with at least one gunshot wound.

Houston police said the shooting happened about 1:10 p.m. on June 12. Investigators found the shooter and another person at the scene, and both cooperated with officers and gave statements. One of those people told police there had been a physical fight with the victim before the shooting. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences had not yet released the victim’s name as of the June 15 police update, pending notification of family.

That is the accountability gap in this case. Police have described the emergency response and the fatal outcome, but they have not publicly labeled the shooting a routine arrest case. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, HPD said the evidence will be presented to a grand jury, where prosecutors will lay out the known facts and jurors will decide whether criminal charges are warranted and, if so, what those charges should be.

In Harris County, that process usually means the public should not expect an immediate charging announcement. Detectives continue to gather statements, review the scene and coordinate with prosecutors while the grand jury weighs whether the facts support an indictment. Until that happens, the public record remains narrow: a shooting, a fight before it, cooperative witnesses at the scene and an unresolved question about whether the use of force was legally justified.

Separate neighborhood accounts have described the incident as starting with a burglary call in Alief, where a resident saw two people inside a home on security video and called neighbors. Those accounts said two brothers confronted the suspected burglars, one suspect was shot and killed, and another fled. HPD has not publicly released a full account that resolves those details, which is part of why the case is going before a grand jury.
