HPD Refers Fatal Fondren Road Shooting to Harris County Grand Jury

An 18-year-old man was fatally shot at 6031 Fondren Road on the morning of March 11, and the Houston Police Department has referred the case to a Harris County Grand Jury after consulting with the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Lopez and Detective N. Sharp reported that officers responded to the residence at approximately 9:15 a.m. and found a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity remained pending official notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences at the time of reporting.

According to the HPD release, further investigation determined the victim was shot while he and his girlfriend were handling a firearm. After reviewing the circumstances with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, investigators determined the shooting would be referred to a Harris County Grand Jury. No charges have been announced.

Early coverage from some media outlets and social media posts described the victim as 17 years old. The official HPD release, attributed to Sgt. Lopez and Detective Sharp under incident number 032162226, identifies him as 18. Because the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences had not yet completed family notification, the victim's name and final confirmed age had not been formally released.

A social media post attributed statements to an HPD sergeant not named in the official release and described the firearm as a Glock handgun. HPD's formal release did not specify the weapon's make or model, and those details have not been independently confirmed through official channels.

Detectives continued interviewing the 18-year-old woman who was present at the time of the shooting, according to reporting from multiple outlets.
