A lightning strike set off a fast-moving house fire in the 13000 block of Slate Mountain Lane in northeast Harris County, near West Lake Houston Parkway and Deussen Parkway, as severe rain and storms swept across Houston.

The Houston Fire Department said crews responded on Saturday, April 18, 2026, and found the second floor fully engulfed in flames at one point. Firefighters briefly switched to defensive mode before getting the blaze under control and extinguishing it.

No injuries were reported to the home’s residents or to firefighters. Officials have not yet said how much damage the house sustained.

Neighbors described the fire as sudden and unusual, and said they were relieved everyone made it out safely. The response unfolded during a stretch of widespread storm activity across the Houston area, when lightning posed a threat not only to trees and power lines but also to rooftops, attics and electrical systems.

ABC13 Houston reported that authorities determined the fire was caused by a lightning strike. FOX 26 Houston also reported that police were called to the home near West Lake Houston Parkway after the blaze broke out.

The scene in northeast Houston was another reminder of how quickly a storm can turn dangerous when lightning reaches a home. In this case, crews were able to stop the fire before it caused injuries, even as flames climbed through the second floor and smoke and water damage assessment remained pending.
