Fifth Ward is turning 160, and the Lyons Avenue Renaissance Festival is throwing the party. The 13th Annual LARF returns Saturday, March 28, from noon to 5 p.m. along the 3700-4000 blocks of Lyons Avenue, with entrance at 3700 Lyons Ave., free admission, 150 local vendors, food trucks, and a mainstage headliner who practically guarantees no one stays seated.

Southern Soul artist Cupid, best known for worldwide line dance anthems that have become staples at family reunions and weddings across the country, will headline the main stage. Organizers are billing the day as "the biggest line dance party in Houston" in honor of the milestone anniversary.

The festival also features a Gospel Stage presented by KTSU 90.9 FM, the radio station that has anchored Sunday morning gospel programming for Houston listeners for decades. And in a tradition that has become one of the event's most anticipated moments, a helicopter egg drop will take place during the afternoon, timed to the festival's customary placement just before Easter.

Harrison Guy, director of arts and culture with the 5th Ward Cultural Arts District, frames the event less as a concert and more as a reunion. "The Fifth Ward community has a legacy of residents who have been here forever," Guy said. "I have several people who have been here over 80 years in this community, so just thinking about it in a way that annually we can come together and see each other, a homecoming of sorts for people who want to come back."

Guy has described the festival as a block party that celebrates all things Fifth Ward, and this year's 160th anniversary gives that framing particular weight. "I think celebrating what this community has achieved and gone through and sustained over 160 years, it makes this festival one not to be missed," he said. The programming was designed with the full family in mind. "We really thought about, 'What if you bring everybody from the youngest in the family to the oldest in the family and that too is representative of Fifth Ward,'" Guy said.

Past headliners at LARF have included R&B singer Leela James in 2023 and Houston's own LeToya Luckett in 2024, reflecting the festival's history of drawing prominent performers to the neighborhood's central corridor.

Parking will be free, including street parking and marked lots at the DeLUXE Theater and Lyons Unity Missionary Baptist Church. Vendor, volunteer, and performer applications are open at lyonsavenuefestival.com, where organizers can also be found on Instagram and Facebook at @lyonsavefestival.
