Man dies after SUV crash in east Harris County, possible medical emergency

A Honda Pilot left Forestwood Drive, crossed into the City Crossing Apartments complex and slammed into a tree in east Harris County, where investigators say the driver may have suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

The crash happened near Forestwood Drive and Woodforest Boulevard as the SUV ran a stop sign, hit a curb, rolled into a grassy area at the apartment complex, struck a metal fence and then hit a tree before coming to rest. Harris County sheriff’s investigators said the man was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Deputies have not publicly identified the driver. They said the case remains open as investigators continue to sort out whether a medical problem, a mechanical issue or another factor led to the wreck. At this stage, the sheriff’s office has pointed to a possible medical issue rather than another driver.

The scene was especially concerning because the SUV crossed into an apartment complex where residents, visitors and nearby motorists could have been in the path of the vehicle.
