Man found beaten to death outside Freeport and Renault business; suspect detained

A man was found beaten to death outside a business in east Harris County on Wednesday evening, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez," authorities said after deputies discovered the body near the intersection of Freeport Street and Renault. Deputies responded to a call that was initially reported as an unknown medical emergency and found the victim unresponsive outside the business.

Officials said the call came in around 7:30–7:35 p.m.; FOX 26 quoted Sgt. Pinkins saying deputies were called "around 7:30 p.m." while KHOU reported deputies arrived "around 7:35 p.m." Responders attempted lifesaving measures, and emergency personnel later pronounced the man dead at the scene, KPRC/Click2Houston reported.

Fox26 and KPRC identified the victim as 44-year-old Oscar Garcia, saying he was found near Freeport and Renault Streets. KHOU and other first reports described the man as appearing to have been beaten when deputies arrived, and KPRC noted responders attempted to save Garcia before he was pronounced deceased on location.

A man detained at the scene was later identified as 30-year-old Florentino Ipina. FOX 26 reported Sgt. Pinkins saying Ipina "came back to the scene and told authorities he had been involved in a fight with the victim." KPRC/Click2Houston and FOX 26 said Ipina was charged with murder and booked into the Harris County Jail; earlier KHOU reporting noted only that a man had been detained while investigators continued their work.

Crime scene investigators and detectives remain on the case to determine what happened, KHOU reported. Authorities told FOX 26 they are unsure whether the victim's injuries were consistent with a stab or gunshot wound, and at least one witness reportedly said they saw the altercation, according to FOX 26. No autopsy results or an official cause of death have been released publicly as of the latest reports.

An Instagram post that circulated after the incident referenced an east Harris County motel and other claims not corroborated by broadcast outlets; that detail remains unverified by law enforcement in the reporting available.
