Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office responded shortly before 10 a.m. on Feb. 20, 2026, to the 11900 block of Bammel N. Houston Road in northwest Harris County and discovered a man with an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot of a convenience store, officials said. KHOU reported HCSO got calls around 9:45 a.m., while FOX 26 placed the call around 9:55 a.m., a window investigators described as within a 15-minute response period.

When deputies arrived, they and first responders began life-saving measures at the scene; KHOU recorded that “deputies immediately started life-saving measures, but the man was later pronounced dead.” No name, age, or other identifying information for the deceased had been released as of the latest reports, and HCSO had not announced any autopsy details or next-of-kin notifications.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez described the scene as large in scope, saying “it is an extensive scene.” Investigators recovered on the order of 20 or more shell casings; FOX 26 quoted Gonzalez saying “there appears to be at least 20 bullet casings, but it's unclear at this time if they are all from this shooting,” while KHOU reported “more than 20 shell casings were found at the scene.” Crime-scene personnel and homicide detectives were on site processing evidence.

Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured what authorities described as an exchange that escalated into gunfire. KHOU and FOX 26 reported the video shows one man approach two other men near a white car, the three walk toward the gas station after a brief conversation, and “moments later, one of them pulls a gun and opens fire.” FOX 26 said it shared surveillance footage as part of its reporting; investigators are reviewing video as part of their preliminary work.

Investigators had not identified or detained the shooter at the time of the initial reports. KHOU noted that “The shooter has not been taken into custody, and investigators said they haven't been able to identify him.” Authorities also said another person arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound, but officials were not able to confirm whether that patient was linked to the convenience store shooting.

Klein Independent School District placed several nearby campuses in secure mode as a precaution following the shooting, including Klein Forest, Vistas, Wunderlich Intermediate and Klenk Elementary, KHOU reported. Detectives described the probe as ongoing and in the early stages; KHOU summarized investigators saying “they're still in the preliminary stage of the investigation, and detectives are working to process the expansive scene.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office. As of this report there were no arrests, no identified suspects, and no publicly released motive or autopsy findings.
