A 54-year-old Republican candidate for Oklahoma Senate District 38 was found dead inside his truck in a wildlife area near Erick, two days after he vanished in Sayre and missed a meeting.

Barry Christian was last seen in Sayre on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. The Sayre Police Department received a missing-person report on Wednesday, April 29, and Beckham County deputies found his 2024 charcoal gray Ram pickup on Thursday morning, April 30, around 9:45 a.m. in the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, just south of Erick. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation special agents later found a body inside the truck and identified it as Christian.

The investigation remains open. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the circumstances of Christian’s death were still under review, and investigators have not said how he died. The agency asked anyone with information to contact its tip line.

Christian was one of three Republicans running in the District 38 primary, a race that reached across a long stretch of western Oklahoma communities including Altus, Mangum, Hobart, Elk City, Hollis, Sayre, Frederick, Davidson, Grandfield and Gotebo.

Christian’s daughter, Brooklyn, said the family was stunned by the turn of events and asked for patience as investigators sort out what happened. “Please pray for our family and friends. Our world is upside down right now. We are still not sure of everything that happened, so please act with grace and treat my dad’s legacy with dignity,” she said.

For now, the case leaves a series of basic questions unanswered: why Christian disappeared after missing the meeting, how his truck ended up in the wildlife area near Erick, and what the evidence will show about his final hours.
