North Harris County crews responded just before 2:30 a.m. to a fatal motorcycle crash in the 23000 block of Aldine Westfield Road at Ciderwood Drive that left an off-duty Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy dead, Precinct 4 deputies said. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office is handling the investigation after emergency responders found the rider unconscious and unresponsive and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy as Ricky Zaragoza, 33, a three-year HCSO veteran; several local outlets spelled the last name Zaragosa. Precinct 4 Capt. Aaron Strain confirmed the deputy was off duty and said, “Unfortunately, this incident is involving an off-duty Harris County HCSO deputy that has been confirmed deceased on the scene. So I want to start out by saying my condolences to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the off-duty deputy’s family.” KHOU and KENS5 reported the deputy was riding his personal motorcycle at the time.

Authorities described the crash as a major two-vehicle collision involving the motorcycle and another vehicle; deputies were dispatched to the scene at about 2:28 a.m. EMS and firefighters attempted lifesaving measures but were unable to revive the rider. Officials told reporters the driver of the other vehicle involved has been cleared of any wrongdoing, and Precinct 4 deputies remained on scene during the early investigation.

A separate arrest was made at the scene: an off-duty Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to court records and agency statements. ABC13 reported the arrested deputy as Aylin Balderas and said Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office placed her on administrative leave; MCSO also told investigators it had no credible information that the off‑duty deputy was involved in the collision or in the HCSO deputy’s death. Court records cited by ABC13 state Balderas told investigators she and the HCSO deputy had been at a bar, had “3 or 4 drinks,” and that she was following him home when she saw the crash.

Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman issued a statement mourning the loss and noting the separate arrest, writing, “This is a heartbreaking loss for the law enforcement community and the entire region. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family, friends, and our brothers and sisters at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with them as they mourn the loss of one of their own.” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez also posted his condolences and said Pct. 4 deputies are handling the investigation.

Investigators have not released a final crash report, toxicology results, or any criminal filings beyond the initial DWI arrest at the scene. Precinct 4 deputies, HCSO public affairs, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Harris County medical examiner are among the agencies whose records and statements reporters say will be needed to confirm the deputy’s full identification, cause and manner of death, and whether additional charges will follow.
