Overturned tanker stalls Highway 6 at Westheimer, no fatalities reported
A tanker rollover at Highway 6 and Westheimer snarled west Houston traffic for more than two hours, with crews checking for spill risks and no fatalities reported.

The overturned tanker clogged one of west Houston’s busiest crossings Monday afternoon, forcing emergency crews, traffic managers and recovery workers into a major response at Highway 6 and Westheimer Road. The crash hit a heavily traveled corridor that serves commuters, shoppers, freight traffic and nearby neighborhoods, then lingered long enough to leave drivers in a bottleneck until about 2:20 p.m.
Houston TranStar said the incident was reported at 12:08 p.m. at 2499 South State Highway 6 near the 14500 block of Westheimer Road and classified it as a major accident. Houston Fire Department officials said no one died and described it as a single-vehicle crash.
SkyEye13 footage showed the tanker lying on its side with Hydroz Environmental written across the vehicle, underscoring how large the truck was and how awkwardly it came to rest in the intersection. Initial reports indicated water had spilled from the truck, a detail that may have limited the danger if the cargo had been more volatile. Even so, the scene raised immediate concerns about traffic tie-ups, worker safety and the possibility of a larger environmental response in a corridor where any tanker rollover can quickly become a public-safety issue.

It remained unclear whether anyone was injured or what happened to the driver after the crash. The investigation was not complete as crews worked to clear the roadway and restore traffic flow.
The disruption landed on a stretch of Westheimer that city leaders have already described as overburdened. In May 2024, the City of Houston and METRO broke ground on a six-mile Westheimer improvement project that includes pavement repairs across all lanes, 50 new bus stops, sidewalks and curb ramps from Loop 610 to downtown at Bagby Street. Houston officials have said Westheimer matters to vehicular traffic, public transportation, pedestrians, business owners, employees, residents, tourists and the city overall.

The rollover also came as Westheimer continued to face serious crash concerns. Houston police announced a separate fatal hit-and-run investigation at 13300 Westheimer Road on April 5, 2026, adding to the sense that one of the region’s most important arteries remains under constant strain.
