Fights broke out among carnival-goers at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Saturday, March 14, sending hundreds of guests running through the grounds and forcing officials to close the carnival roughly two hours before its normal midnight shutdown. The carnival shut down at about 10 p.m., according to HLSR officials, who said law enforcement and on-site security responded immediately.

Videos circulating on Instagram and TikTok showed large crowds sprinting through the midway, physical altercations unfolding in the middle of the crowded carnival area, and security officers breaking up fights while police escorted people from the grounds. Witnesses told KHOU they were unsure what initially sparked the violence. Damion Potts, who recorded video of the incident, described the moment the chaos escalated: "I seen the dude throw the punch, and then after that it was just — I didn't know who was with who. I just seen punches thrown, kicks." Potts said the arrival of mounted police shifted the dynamic fast: "I feel like the police were on alert, and once the horses got there, I think a lot of people scattered."

Instagram user Natalye Osorio, posting as @exploringwithgrace and quoted by the Houston Chronicle, described the scene from inside the carnival. "It was honestly really scary," Osorio wrote. "Then fights started breaking out, people were throwing food and drinks, and some were even trying to fight the cops and getting arrested. Definitely not the experience we expected."

Rumors of a shooting or stabbing spread rapidly among attendees. Houston police confirmed to KPRC that there was not a shooting at the carnival. A reporter who spoke directly with an officer on scene was told the situation involved a threat of "some guys threatening to shoot," not an actual shooting. Officials said they were not aware of any injuries. No official arrest count had been released as of this reporting.

HLSR issued a statement acknowledging the incident and outlining its response: "Saturday night, fights occurred in the carnival area, causing some guests to run and create confusion. Out of an abundance of caution, the carnival closed early to prioritize the safety of our guests. Law enforcement and on-site security responded immediately." The rodeo added: "We hold daily meetings with law enforcement and are working with them on an elevated level. Law enforcement and the Rodeo are actively monitoring social media and deploying additional officers as needed. Together, we are taking proactive steps to help ensure this type of incident does not occur again and to maintain a safe environment for our guests."

The rodeo resumed normal operations Sunday, March 15. Officials said they would increase the presence of officers for the remainder of the season but did not indicate any plans to alter carnival hours, which run until midnight, three hours after shopping and dining venues close at 9 p.m.

For families who held off attending after seeing the videos, Sunday arrivals offered some reassurance, though concerns lingered. "A lot of people running and trampling over each other, and having small kids, that's something to be worried about," said Kyla Nunley, who told KHOU she chose the daytime visit deliberately. "That's why we come during the daytime."

The incident comes in the final week of the 2026 rodeo season. Houston Public Media reported the last day of the rodeo is Sunday, March 22, giving officials one week to demonstrate that the elevated security posture holds.
