Sheriff says robbery attempt led to shooting near Champions Point
A roadside shooting near Kleinbrook Drive left one man in critical condition after what deputies say was a robbery attempt inside a Tesla.

Harris County authorities detained multiple people after a midday shooting near Champions Point, where a confrontation inside a Tesla left one man critically wounded and shut down part of Bammel North Houston Road near Kleinbrook Drive. Officials said there was no threat to the public, but the close-range violence on a busy northwest Harris County corridor raised immediate questions about who was involved and what happened inside the car.
The shooting was reported at about 11:09 a.m. Tuesday in the 12200 block of Bammel North Houston Road, near the intersection of Bammel North Houston Road, Kleinbrook Drive and Champion Forest Drive, not far from a Valero gas station. Investigators later clarified that the gunfire happened in the roadway while the two men were stopped at a red light, after initially describing the scene as a gas station.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Ben Katrib said the two men had recently met to create social media content and were riding together in the driver’s Tesla when the encounter turned violent. Katrib said the passenger allegedly pulled a gun and tried to rob the driver. During a short struggle, the driver shot the passenger. The passenger then got out of the vehicle, tried to run, and collapsed nearby in the roadway.

The passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition after emergency surgery. Deputies said the wound was in the upper torso. The driver was also taken to the hospital as a precaution and did not appear to have been shot.
Northbound lanes of Bammel North Houston Road were closed while investigators worked the scene and sorted out the sequence of events. Authorities have not publicly identified either man. Detectives said they were reviewing camera footage from the Tesla, which could show the struggle, the shooting and the moments before the crash of events that unfolded in the middle of a neighborhood traffic stop.

Officials said findings from the video review would be sent to the district attorney’s office to help determine whether charges should be filed. For residents along Kleinbrook Drive and the surrounding Champions Point streets, the immediate concern was whether the danger had spread beyond the roadway. Deputies said it had not.
