A Sunday evening argument among teenagers inside a north Harris County apartment ended with a 14-year-old shot three times, a stark reminder of how fast a dispute can turn deadly when a gun is within reach.

Deputies said the shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. at the Villa Springs Apartments, 15101 Blue Ash Drive near East Airtex in north Houston. Three teenagers were inside an apartment when the verbal confrontation escalated, and investigators believe a 14-year-old suspect pulled out a gun and shot another 14-year-old.

The wounded teen was taken to a hospital and later described as stable or in fair condition, a sign the injuries were serious but not believed to be life-threatening. A witness and the suspected shooter were detained at the scene as Harris County sheriff’s deputies began piecing together what led to the gunfire.

Investigators still do not know where the weapon came from, whether it belonged to an adult or whether it had been stolen. Sgt. Freder Munoz said deputies do not believe adults were present when the shooting happened, raising immediate questions about how two 14-year-olds were able to get into an argument that turned violent with a firearm inside a residential complex.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez first posted about the shooting on social media at 6:41 p.m. Sunday. The case now goes to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether charges are filed and what those charges could be.

The shooting adds to a troubling pattern that has kept teen gun violence in focus across Harris County. ABC13 reported that county leaders recently called for action after at least five teen shootings and four teen deaths happened within a short period. The Harris County Juvenile Probation Department says it uses community-based, family-oriented, least restrictive interventions while emphasizing accountability for both parent and child.

For parents in north Harris County, the case is another warning that conflicts among teens can escalate with little warning, especially in apartment settings where neighbors, children and other bystanders are close by. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the largest sheriff’s office in Texas and the third-largest in the nation, continues to investigate how this one apartment argument ended with a 14-year-old in the hospital and another facing possible charges.
