More than 20 shots tore through the basketball courts at Alvin D. Baggett Community Center on Keene Street in Galena Park around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, killing a 19-year-old man and leaving two others fighting for their lives.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a group of men had gathered at the courts near Keene and 14th streets to play basketball when a fight broke out between two groups. Investigators believe a vehicle then approached and gunfire erupted across the scene. Gonzalez said he remained unsure whether all the shots came from the vehicle or whether there was also an exchange of gunfire between those present.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the court. The two other men shot, ages 20 and 22, attempted to run from the area but were found collapsed a short distance away; both were transported to a hospital in critical condition. Detectives said they were also working to determine whether anyone else had been struck.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office responded and assisted Galena Park police. As of early Monday, no arrests had been made and no motive had been identified. Investigators had not yet established the full sequence of events, including how many people fired and from where.

"This is a dangerous thing that happened," Gonzalez said. "Anybody could have been hurt."

The sheriff called directly on the community for help, asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston.

"We need the public's help," he said.
