Two arrested in Galena Park basketball court shooting death of teen
Two men were arrested Friday in the Galena Park basketball court shooting that killed 19-year-old Mario Sosa Ruiz, ending a monthlong homicide probe on Keene Street.

Two men were arrested Friday in the Galena Park basketball court shooting that killed 19-year-old Mario Sosa Ruiz, giving investigators a formal answer in a case that turned a neighborhood gathering place into a homicide scene on Keene Street. Harris County sheriff’s investigators said Angel Mendiola Ramirez and Kevin Jaimes were booked into the Harris County Jail.
Ramirez, who is in his early 20s, was charged with murder. Jaimes, also in his early 20s, faced an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. The arrests came after detectives tied the men to the March 29 encounter at the Alvin D. Baggett Community Center, where family identified the victim as Mario Sosa Ruiz.
Investigators said the shooting was not random. They believe several men met up at the Baggett center around 9:45 p.m., a fight broke out, and Ramirez opened fire. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said three men were shot that night, including Sosa Ruiz, and that the two other victims were 20 and 22 years old. Gonzalez also said investigators believed at least 20 rounds were fired before the scene was secured.
The arrests mattered because they clarified how a basketball court in the middle of Galena Park became the site of a deadly escalation. They also came after city leaders moved quickly to tighten safety around the park and community center. Galena Park put in place a nightly curfew for city-owned parks from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., and officials added 24/7 security monitoring stations connected directly to dispatch. The city warned that curfew violations could lead to charges.

Residents have described the curfew as a needed step for young people who use the park and surrounding recreation space, while also calling for more patrols and stronger protection. Those concerns have been sharpened by the history around the Baggett center. Three memorials now stand within steps of the court and nearby community center, each honoring a teen killed in separate shootings tied to the area since 2023.
For Galena Park, the case now carries two messages at once: Mario Sosa Ruiz’s death has led to arrests, and the response has made clear that public gathering spots can be flashpoints when disputes bring guns into shared spaces.
