A toddler was found walking in a public roadway on Shelby View Lane, where deputies said the front door stood open and the home was empty, while another young child was left alone in the Cypress Falls area in a second, separate case. Harris County Precinct 4 said the back-to-back calls pointed to the same danger, a very young child left without supervision in neighborhoods where a few missed minutes could turn into a crisis.

ABC13 Houston identified the mothers as 32-year-old Natalie Carmona and 39-year-old Maricela Valdez. Deputies said Carmona allegedly left her 2-year-old alone while she dropped off other children at school. Valdez allegedly left her 3-year-old alone while she dropped off other children at school. Carmona was arrested and charged with abandoning a child, and she later bonded out. Valdez also appeared before a magistrate and was charged with abandoning a child.

In the Shelby View Lane case, a magistrate said a witness found the 3-year-old walking in the roadway. Deputies then found the home empty, with the front door open. In the other incident, the child was reported in the Cypress Falls area, and both cases were handled by Precinct 4, which says it is the largest constable’s office in the United States and serves north Harris County.

The two arrests underscored how quickly family strain can spill into a public safety call. School drop-offs, childcare gaps and the pressure of managing multiple children can collide with housing instability or mental-health stress, but Texas law draws a hard line when a child is left without reasonable and necessary care. Under Texas Penal Code Section 22.041, abandoning a child means leaving a child in circumstances no reasonable, similarly situated adult would choose.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services confirmed it is investigating both incidents. ABC13 also reported that Carmona carried a higher bond because she had previously been charged with injuring a child, though that case was dismissed. For Harris County families, the warning signs are immediate and plain: a very young child outside alone, an open door, or a home that appears unsupervised should trigger an emergency call right away. In these cases, neighbors were the first line of defense, and that quick action kept the children from wandering farther into danger.
