The University of Houston placed 19 graduate programs in the national top 50 of U.S. News & World Report's latest graduate school rankings, up from 15 the previous year, while 48 programs overall cracked the top 100 in results released Monday.

Four programs now rank in the top 10 nationally, three of them at the UH Law Center: part-time law at No. 5, intellectual property law at No. 7, and health care law at No. 9. Health care law has held a top-10 ranking for more than 15 consecutive years. Petroleum engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering rounded out UH's top-10 contingent at No. 8.

"This ranking reflects more than just numbers; it highlights the real-world impact of our students' research and the caliber of mentorship provided by our faculty," said Diane Z. Chase, UH senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

The Law Center was the standout unit in the new rankings, growing its top-50 specialty count from nine programs to 11. The school also rose nine spots in the overall law school rankings to No. 54 nationally. Engineering disciplines extended their gains as well, with chemical engineering at No. 34 and industrial/manufacturing/systems engineering at No. 41, while multiple programs posted double-digit rank improvements year over year.

Sarah Larsen, vice provost and dean of the UH Graduate School, pointed to the university's campus-wide academic culture. "The University of Houston's commitment to a high-quality graduate experience goes beyond the classroom, and these national rankings are a clear indicator our students are receiving a world-class education supported by a campus culture that prizes academic rigor and holistic success," she said.

U.S. News ranks professional programs in business, education, engineering, law, medicine, and nursing each year based on enrollment numbers, job placement rates, faculty statistics, and other quality indicators designed to help prospective students make informed decisions.

For Harris County, the results carry real economic weight. UH's graduate programs feed directly into the energy, engineering, health care, and legal sectors anchored across the region, from the refineries along the Ship Channel to the institutions clustered around the Texas Medical Center. The Law Center's sustained top-10 positions in health care law and intellectual property law, alongside petroleum engineering's No. 8 national rank, reflect sustained investment in the two fields most closely tied to Houston's commercial identity.
