An 84-year-old woman was killed inside her west Harris County home after a stray bullet tore through the kitchen near Bear Creek Park, a case that now has Joshua Ramos facing a manslaughter charge.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Ramos was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail after investigators tied him to the March 7 shooting death of Joanne Bennett at a home in the 5600 block of Saddlebred Drive in Savanah Estates. Deputies responded around 10:20 p.m. and found Bennett on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Investigators said Ramos was firing a gun in a lot off Addicks Satsuma Road, across Langham Creek from the home. One of the shots traveled into Bennett’s house and struck her while she was inside doing an ordinary task, a reminder of how quickly reckless gunfire can turn a residential street into a deadly scene for people who had nothing to do with the shooting.

Bennett, identified in an obituary as Joanne Mosby Bennett of Houston, was born May 22, 1941. The obituary said she died March 28, 2026, at age 84.

The case is being prosecuted as manslaughter, not murder. Under Texas law, manslaughter means recklessly causing the death of an individual, and it is generally a second-degree felony. In cases like this, prosecutors do not have to show a specific intent to kill Bennett. They must show that the gunfire was reckless enough to cause a death.

For west Harris County, the killing fits a painful pattern that neighbors know too well: a shot fired without a clear target can cross streets, bayous and backyards, then land inside a bedroom, living room or kitchen. In this case, the bullet reached a woman who was in her own home near Bear Creek Park, far from any apparent confrontation.

The arrest gives investigators a suspect to hold accountable, but it does not change the basic fact at the center of the case. Joanne Bennett was inside her kitchen when the gunfire came through the house, and a residential block in Savanah Estates became the site of a death that began elsewhere and ended at her home.
