Woman Fatally Shot in West Harris County Neighborhood, Investigation Underway
A woman was shot to death Wednesday on Rusty Ridge Lane in front of her two young children, two blocks from Duryea Elementary School in Katy.

Two young children were screaming in the street when a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived at the 6700 block of Rusty Ridge Lane in Katy on Wednesday afternoon to find their mother shot and killed in the road. The shooting occurred around 12:40 p.m. near North Fry Road and West Little York Road, placing the scene two blocks from Duryea Elementary School in Cy-Fair ISD.
The sequence of events had begun with a call from the same woman, who reported finding a bullet left on top of her vehicle near her home, a complaint HCSO logged as a terroristic threat. A deputy was already en route to her address when separate 911 calls came in reporting a shooting nearby. The deputy encountered the scene himself moments after arriving.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a woman was shot and killed on the neighborhood street and that the suspected shooter stayed at the scene and was cooperating. According to Gonzalez, the man had been driving a vehicle pulling a small work trailer when he stopped to allow the woman's car to pass. The two individuals do not appear to have a known connection, and both are believed to reside in the area. Investigators said the woman got out of her car, appeared angry, and began arguing with the man, who told deputies he did not know her and tried to de-escalate the situation. Both individuals reportedly pulled out pistols during the encounter. The man shot the woman, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her children witnessed the shooting.
The man was detained Wednesday afternoon, though HCSO had not announced charges by early afternoon. Investigators have not released the names of either party, identified a motive, or confirmed whether the confrontation was connected to the bullet-on-vehicle report from earlier in the day. Investigators have not said what led up to the shooting or if anyone else was injured. HCSO's CSI unit and Homicide Division responded to Rusty Ridge Lane within the hour.
Because both individuals are believed to live in the neighborhood, residents with doorbell cameras or home security systems may hold footage critical to establishing what happened in the hours before 12:40 p.m. Investigators in cases like this routinely canvass within a several-block radius. Preserve any footage and contact the HCSO Homicide Division directly at 713-274-9100 before overwriting files. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-8477 or through the P3 Tips mobile app. Anonymous tips resulting in a felony arrest are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000.
HCSO reported an impressive 95 percent clearance rate for homicide cases as 2024 closed, well above the national figure of 61.4 percent recorded by the FBI for the same year. With the alleged shooter already detained at the scene and cooperating, investigators enter this case with significant early advantages.
The woman's children, who were present when she was killed, may qualify for immediate support through the Texas Crime Victims' Compensation program, administered by the Office of the Attorney General. The program covers emergency housing, counseling, and related expenses for crime victims and their families. Apply or request information by calling 1-800-983-9933.
The active scene was located two blocks away from Duryea Elementary School. The school was not placed on lockdown, and HCSO has not indicated any threat to the broader neighborhood. Homicide investigators remained on Rusty Ridge Lane as of Wednesday afternoon.
